A. Jaisalmer can be reached by any of the 3 means given below:

By Air: Daily flights by SpiceJet connecting Jaisalmer to Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Udaipur, Surat and Ahmedabad.

By Train: There are 2 trains from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, one early morning and the other late night. Please Contact IRCTC for details.

By Road: The best way to reach Jaisalmer from Jodhpur is by road. The road to Jaisalmer is a very good defence road and it takes approximately 4 hrs to reach Jaisalmer. You can drive in your own private car or hire a taxi from Jodhpur. Convenient Bus service is also available every half an hour from Bombay Motors Crossing in Jodhpur. The Buses are mostly private sleeper coaches.

 

Q. How do I drive from Delhi to Jaisalmer?

A. Distance between Delhi to Jaisalmer is 793 kms. You have to take NH 8 which is a very good four-lane toll highway. The drive from Delhi to Jaisalmer takes approximately 15 hours by car. The distance between Delhi and Jaipur is 260 kms and takes less than 4 hours to get to Jaipur. A good place to halt for a break on this highway is the Rajasthan Tourism run RTDC Midway at Behror (about half way between Delhi and Jaipur). From Jaipur you have to head for Jodhpur via Ajmer Bypass and Beawar. At Beawar change to NH 114 toward Bar. At Bar go onto NH 112 towards Jodhpur. Jodhpur to Jaisalmer (see the answer to the above question).

Places of interests in Jaisalmer 

Jaisalmer Fort : Jaisalmer Fort is also known as "Sonar Quila" because of its golden yellow color. The fort is made of soft yellow Jurassic sandstone. It has five interconnected palaces with four gateways like Akhaiyal, Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol and Hava Pol.

Jain Temples : The fort of Jaisalmer has three exquisitely carved Jain Temples. These were built in 1509 with fine Jurassic sandstone. They are dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras-Rikhabdevji and Sambhavnathji. There is also a Gyan Bhandar or Library inside this temple where some of the oldest manuscripts of India are kept.

Gadisar Lake : The Gadisar Lake was once a source of water supply to the Jaisalmer city. There are many small temples and shrines around it. Tourists can enjoy boating here. The small museum here displays the folk art.

Nathmal ji ki Haveli : Two architect brothers built this haveli in the 19th century. This was earmarked as the Prime Minister's house. Interestingly, while one brother concentrated on the right, the other concentrated on the left. The result is a symphony epitomizing the side by side symmetry during construction.

Patwon ki Haveli : This is one of the largest and most elaborate Haveli in Jaisalmer and stands in a narrow lane. Exquisitely and intricately carved, this Haveli is five storeys high and a very popular tourist attraction because of its carvings.

Ludurva Jain Temple : This is a famous Jain Temple located approximately 7 kms from Jaisalmer and 500 m off the Jaisalmer Sam road.

Kuldhara : Khuldhara is a very famous heritage village in Ruins 11 kms from Jaisalmer and, 5 Kms away from the Jaisalmer Sam Road. Many Movies have been shot in this location.

Bara Bagh : Bara Bagh Royal cenotaphs are located approximately 4 kms on Jaislamer-Ramgarh Road. These “Chatris” were constructed centuries ago in the memory of members of the royal families who passed away.

Desert National Park : Desert National Park also houses one of the heaviest flying birds in the world, the endangered Great Indian Bustard. It also has fossil evidence dating back to the Jurassic Period indicating hot and humid climate characterized by dense forests.The Desert National Park is a bird watcher’s paradise where you can explore the real bounties of nature. The Indira Gandhi Canal is 649 km long and consists of Rajasthan feeder canals and Rajasthan main canal and runs through 167 km in Punjab and Haryana and remaining 492 km in Rajasthan. The canal is one of the project of the Green revolution in India and also runs through The Great Thar Desert.

A. Safaris are either full day, ie. 8 hours or half day ie. 4 hrs. It is recommended that you start a Camel/Camel Cart safari early morning or in the evening depending on the climate. You can also take a safari for a shorter period. Night Camel/Camel cart safari can also be organized. Jeep safari can be undertaken during the day or night. You can start a day safari any time of the day, preferably in the morning after breakfast. Night safari can be undertaken later in the evening.
